Adam Shola, a laborer, was given a four-year prison sentence on Thursday by a Federal High Court in Kaduna for selling cannabis, sometimes known as marijuana.
After the offender admitted responsibility to the crime, Justice Garba Mohammed found him guilty and sentenced him.
He pleaded guilty after hearing the allegation and begged the judge for a light sentence.
Justice Mohammed stated in his ruling that he was satisfied with the prosecutor's testimony.
“The court is convinced beyond reasonable doubt going by the weight of the evidence adduced before me. I, therefore, pronounce the defendant guilty and convict him summarily.
“The convict is hereby sentenced to four years imprisonment beginning from May 5 when he was arrested,” the judge held.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency was also given a directive by the Mohammed to destroy the drugs after 90 days if the conviction is not appealed.
Earlier, NDLEA Counsel T. I. Atserhegh informed the court that the defendant was caught selling drugs on May 5 at Kawo Bus Stop in Kaduna.
He claimed that 5 kg of cannabis sativa, "a narcotic drug similar to cocaine, heroin, and LSD from Sola, was found by NDLEA agents.
According to Section 11(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap 30, LFN 2004, the offense is criminal.
The prosecutor submitted a clear envelope containing drug residue and requested the jury to find the prisoner guilty based on his plea and the available evidence.
