The President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has become the new President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Tinubu became the president of the organization at the 63rd meeting of ECOWAS leaders held in Bissau, the capital of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.
Speaking after the transfer of power from the former president of the region, President Tinubu said: "We will take democracy seriously. Democracy is very difficult but it is the best form of government."
Earlier, ECOWAS member countries expressed their gratitude and congratulations on the success of the Nigerian election which led to the victory of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the president of Nigeria.
The former president of the region and the president of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embaló in his opening speech praised Nigeria for creating peace and strengthening democracy in the West African region.
The President of ECOWAS, Omar Alieu Touray, on behalf of the community and institutions, congratulated President Tinubu on his election and ascension to his seat as the President of Nigeria which is the largest economy and country in Africa.
Touray expressed his gratitude to President Embaló for his leadership as ECOWAS President in the past twelve months where he stated that the people of the region have achieved many successes.
He also congratulated the President of Sierra Leone Julius Maada Bio on his re-election.
